A. Lange & Söhne

Saxon precision, assembled twice

A. Lange & Söhne represents the German answer to Geneva's haute horlogerie: a three-quarter plate, a hand-engraved balance cock and a formal rigour that needs no decoration. The brand was re-founded in 1990, after forty years of interruption.

History

The evolution of A. Lange & Söhne

In 1845 Ferdinand Adolph Lange founded his manufacture in Glashütte, laying the foundation for the Saxon watch industry. The three-quarter plate he introduced, along with the metric system, still shapes the region today.

After 1945 the company was expropriated and dissolved into the VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe. The name disappeared from the market for four decades.

In 1990, just days after German reunification, great-grandson Walter Lange re-registered the brand together with Günter Blümlein. The first collection appeared in 1994 — among it the Lange 1, with its asymmetric dial and outsize date.

The manufacture has belonged to the Richemont Group since 2000, yet continues to produce exclusively in Glashütte and in very modest numbers. Every movement is assembled twice: once for adjustment, then dismantled, finished and put together for the final time.

Secondary market

What matters with A. Lange & Söhne

  1. 01

Lange produces in small numbers and exclusively in precious metal. As a result, the secondary market is narrower and less volatile than for steel sports watches, with stable demand from Europe and Asia.

  2. 02

The Datograph is regarded as one of the most important modern chronographs. Early examples of the first series are specifically sought by collectors.

  3. 03

Because every case is gold or platinum, signs of polishing are especially critical. Material loss at the sharp edges is irreversible and reduces value.
