Since 1839 Patek Philippe has stood for the most uncompromising interpretation of Geneva watchmaking. Small production numbers, family-run independence and an unbroken record of auction dominance make the brand the reference point for collectors.
The evolution of Patek Philippe
In 1839 the Polish emigrant Antoni Patek and the watchmaker Franciszek Czapek founded their manufacture in Geneva. In 1845 the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe joined, his invention of the crown winding mechanism replacing the key-wound pocket watch. Since 1851 the house has traded as Patek Philippe & Cie.
In 1932 the Geneva-based Stern family took over the company — it is still run by the fourth generation today. This independence is no marketing formula; it is the reason Patek Philippe can develop its models consistently over decades instead of bending them to quarterly targets.
In 1976 the manufacture broke with its own tradition: Gérald Genta designed the Nautilus, a steel sports watch priced like a gold one. Controversial at first, it is today the most coveted steel model in the entire market.
In parallel, Patek Philippe continues to build what the brand originally stood for: perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, grande complications. The Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva and the Extract from the Archives — confirmation of a watch's original factory configuration — are indispensable tools for collectors.
