Chronomètre Bleu

Tantalum and a blue found nowhere else

The Chronomètre Bleu is the manufacture's most accessible watch and, at once, its most sought after: a tantalum case, a deep blue lacquered dial, and a red-gold movement that refutes every restraint of the front on the back.

History

The evolution of the Chronomètre Bleu

In 2009 François-Paul Journe introduced the Chronomètre Bleu as an addition to the Souveraine line. It is built on Calibre 1304, a hand-wound movement with two barrels and roughly 56 hours of power reserve.

The distinction lies in the material: tantalum is remarkably dense, corrosion-resistant, and extremely difficult to work. The manufacture chose it because its bluish-grey sheen corresponds with the lacquered dial.

The dial is built up in several layers of lacquer over a silver base and shifts, depending on the light, from navy blue to near black. It carries no seconds scale at the rim — a deliberate reduction.

Originally conceived as a quiet addition to the range, the Chronomètre Bleu became the house's most coveted reference within a few years and now trades well above list on the secondary market.

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

Demand permanently outstrips production. Primary-market waiting lists are the main driver of secondary-market pricing.

  2. 02

Tantalum is hard but not scratchproof. The condition of the satin-finished surfaces is the most important visual value factor.

  3. 03

Original certificate and box are essential with Journe; incomplete sets are valued noticeably lower.
