Ingenieur

Anti-magnetism in a Genta case

The Ingenieur began as a technical answer to magnetic fields. In 1976 Gérald Genta gave it the form that still defines it: an integrated bracelet and a round bezel with five visible bores.

History

The evolution of the Ingenieur

In 1955 IWC introduced the Ingenieur Ref. 666. A soft-iron inner case shielded the automatic movement from magnetic fields — designed for engineers and technicians.

The Ingenieur SL followed in 1967, and in 1976 came Gérald Genta's design: Ref. 1832, with an integrated steel bracelet, a functional bezel and a price well above the usual steel-watch level.

In 1989 IWC built the Ingenieur Ref. 3508, which withstood magnetic fields of up to 500,000 A/m — a benchmark to this day.

In 2023 the line deliberately returned to the Genta design with the Ingenieur Automatic 40, in reworked proportions and with an in-house calibre.

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

Original Genta-era Ref. 1832 examples are rare and trade well above later generations.

  2. 02

Integrated bracelets on vintage pieces are practically irreplaceable; stretched links significantly reduce value.

  3. 03

The generation launched in 2023 is in strong demand and only sparingly available on the primary market.
