The President
The Day-Date is made exclusively in precious metal. It was the first wristwatch to display the day of the week fully spelled out alongside the date — and for decades has been the watch worn when nothing more needs to be proven.
The evolution of the Day-Date
Introduced in 1956, the Day-Date was the first wristwatch to show the full day of the week in a window at twelve o'clock. Rolex still offers it today in more than twenty languages.
The purpose-built President bracelet, with its semi-circular three-piece links, was launched alongside the model and gave it its unofficial name.
The Day-Date has never been made in steel. It is available in yellow, white and Everose gold as well as 950 platinum — a rule Rolex has never departed from.
The current Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40 references use calibre 3255 with around 70 hours of power reserve.

What to look for when buying

Vintage references with stone or onyx dials form their own collecting field and are valued independently of the gold price.
- 02
On older gold watches, the case contour is decisive. Gold is soft; over-polished cases lose the crisp edge between bezel and case middle.

The President bracelet should be checked for play between the links. A stretched gold bracelet is costly to restore.
- 04
Platinum executions with an ice-blue dial are a Rolex peculiarity: this colour is reserved for the platinum variant.
