The 1977 sports watch, brought back
The 222 was Vacheron's answer to the Royal Oak and the Nautilus: introduced in 1977 for the house's 222nd anniversary, designed by Jörg Hysek, and revived in 2022 as a Historiques edition in yellow gold.
The evolution of the Historiques 222
In 1977 Vacheron Constantin launched the 222, designed by the then 25-year-old Jörg Hysek: an integrated bracelet, a notched bezel, and a Maltese cross set into the case at four o'clock.
The Jumbo version in steel, 37 millimetres, is regarded today as one of the most sought-after sports watches of the 1970s.
The line was discontinued in the 1980s and superseded by the Phidias and, later, the Overseas.
In 2022 the 222 returned as the Historiques 222 in yellow gold, with Calibre 2455/2 and a design language that deliberately hews close to the original.
